Cannabis genetics have come a long way in the last several years, with breeding being legal in many states, the selection process has become more and more refined until now almost every genetic has a beautiful white shimmer, purple hue, and larger round nug structures. There are many strains of cannabis that are the cornerstones to hyped modern crosses, and none are more famous than GG#4. GG#4 (Gorilla Glue) is a cross of Chem’s Sister with Chocolate Diesel and Sour Dubb, bred by Joesy Whales because of how sticky the resin was. Today we will be examining Gorilla Pie Flower from Illicit.

My name is Patrick Waibel, I’m a 3 time US Cannabis Cup Winning cultivator and consultant and I have a 10-point grading system used for scoring.

This 10-point grading system for cannabis products is adapted from the grading process involved in most reputable cannabis events. I’ve found that an objective process allows me to truly determine what the best products are. The process is similar for all cannabis products but I’m going to outline cannabis flower for today’s example.

It’s time to find out if Gorilla Pie has the same resinous traits as its ancestor.

Gorilla Pie | Illicit

I chose the Gorilla Pie because of the iconic GG#4 heritage and because I tend to find these types of crosses to not only be very enjoyable to smoke but also very potent. I opened the jar to observe a spongy bud consistency that still felt dry to the touch. I lifted it to my nose and got that familiar Chocolate Diesel aroma that I’ve come to know as a “GG” trait, there was wavering pungency but the aroma was unmistakable. Upon closer examination, The flower appeared light green with some white crystal effects and small amounts of purple moving through the bud. Although the appearance of the flower was very enticing, it wasn’t the frosty nugget I’d hoped to see from a “GG” cross. I began to break up the flower and immediately my fingers were covered with sticky pieces of bud. Just as the breeder had intended, Gorilla Pie was very sticky.

  1. Visual Appearance Score 7 – The GG variety is a very visually appealing genetic. Although I found glimmers of it, I found the visual appearance to be a bit disappointing.
  2. Smell/Aroma Score 8 – It had a wonderful nose to it, reminiscent of the original glue.
  3. Proper Moisture Content Score 10 – This flower was very sticky and held to its Namesake. Was cured perfectly and with apparent care.

I rolled the joint which was made easier by the stickiness of the sample. As I lit the joint, the fuelly, hashy smell of chocolate diesel and kush filled the air. I took a big hit and exhaled to find myself on another planet. Like someone punched me I sat back in the chair and licked my lips as the taste of chocolate and fuel billowed out of my mouth. I didn’t cough once which indicated that any excess nutrient had been removed or that the sample was grown organically.

  1. Initial Flavor – Score 8 –  Had that good GG flavor with some sweetness.
  2. Flush – Score 10 – Flushed to perfection. No residuals in the ash.
  3. Harshness – Score 9 – Was very smooth.

Gorilla Pie | Illicit

As I continue to smoke the joint, the flavor starts to waver. This is disappointing because of the great flush job. It still tasted good but not nearly as strong. I was smashed, complete couch lock. Nostalgia led me to this genetic but I’m not certain I would smoke it again, one of the problems with purchasing due to nostalgia is that the bias involved tends to make you compare it to previous iterations of the genetic and not just to the grading system. I would try more flower from this cultivator as I feel that they did an excellent job.

  1. Late Stage Flavor Score 6 – Unfortunately, the flavor wavered toward the middle making finishing the joint less desirable
  2. Potency Score 10 – Very potent and very medicinal. If your intention is to forget the problems you have, this is the strain for you.
  3. Effect Score 10 – Super Strong couch lock effect
  4. Repeat Excitement Score 6 – Did this product make me want to reach for it again after the effects wore off? In this case, no it didn’t. Not that the cultivator didn’t do an incredible job cultivating.

Gorilla Pie by Illicit

Total Score 84/100

Grade B

In conclusion, I would recommend Gorilla Pie for those in need of some strong pain relief or relaxation. Not a morning smoke and probably shouldn’t operate any heavy machinery for a couple of hours after trying this. I can’t wait to try more products from Illicit!
